                   Transaction in own shares - 6 January 2009

Martin  Currie  Portfolio Investment Trust plc, on 6 January 2009,  bought  back
75,000  ordinary  shares  at  a  price  of  97.5000p  per  share  for  immediate
cancellation.

Following this purchase 134,392,458 ordinary shares remain in issue.
